Ruptured Sinus of Valsalva : RSOV Treatment in Delhi
It is a rare form of heart defect in which there is rupture of aortic sinus (sinus present in major blood vessel of the heart) into cardiac chambers of the heart.
Most common sinus that ruptures is right aortic sinus.
When there is a large aortic sinus aneurysm but un-ruptured then it is asymptomatic and can be detected clinically by a murmur on auscultation.
As soon as it ruptures then it can have a varied presentation ranging from an asymptomatic murmur to cardiogenic shock or even sudden cardiac death.
It can be congenital or may be acquired in nature.
Echocardiography is modality of choice for diagnosing the problem.
Treatment or management of ruptured sinus of Valsalva is by medications for controlling the symptoms of heart failure but ultimately this needs to be closed whenever diagnosed.
Now a day, ruptured sinus of Valsalva can be easily closed in cath lab by transcatheter method (i.e. by angiography) by putting a device across the defect. No need of open heart surgery in majority of cases.
