What is a Patent Foramen Ovale?

PFO is a structure present in all fetal hearts. It allows oxygenated blood to the left side of the heart so that brain can get oxygenated blood.

Is it a normal thing to have a PFO?

Yes. It is present in all neonates. In 75-78% of the cases, it closes after some time. In the rest of population, the PFO does not close. It allows minimal blood entry from left side to the right side with no side effect.

When PFO allows blood to travel from right side of heart to left side.

What are the problems that can arise from a PFO?

Stroke can be the result if a clot that is formed on right side and crosses via PFO to left side of heart.

Is there any treatment for these problems?

Yes, by closing the PFO. This can be done easily by using a device via angiographic method.
